Quote of the Week: Bonhoeffer

Right now, I’m reading Eric Metaxas’s biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and pastor who actively worked against Hitler. This particular quote is from a sermon he wrote for his niece’s wedding while he was in prison.
Marriage, Bonhoeffer wrote, is “more than your love for each other” (p. 458), which means it should endure through every trial. Sometimes it’s hard to realize the truth of this as a newly married person, or someone who is looking forward to an upcoming wedding, but as the trials come, you begin to see it. We have to rely on God to keep us united as a couple. And we have to be firmly committed to the vows we made on our wedding day, no matter how “in love” we feel at any given time.
