Catherine Booth, who co-founded the Salvation Army with her husband, was a woman of remarkable zeal and courage. She chose to believe that women could preach just as well as men (although she couldn’t well explain Paul’s command for women to be silent in church). And whether or not you agree with her methods, she certainly achieved some remarkable results. She raised eight children, trained numerous Salvation Army workers, and was known for her gentleness and power in speaking the gospel.
I love this particular quote from her. While we should be sure that we are actually fighting for what’s right (measure your convictions by God’s Word instead of wrapping God’s Word to fit your beliefs, as Catherine may have done),it is so true that, “if we are to better the future we must disturb the present.” So Jesus did, and so His followers continue to do.
